Can the New York Mets get something better out of Chris Flexen? They are going to have to if they are going to keep pace with the Colorado Rockies in a game that is set to begin at 9:40 PM ET at Coors Field in Denver. The Mets, who are out of the playoff race, for all intents and purposes, were expected to be a very active team as the trade deadline approached. But when the dust settled, they have dealt Addison Reed to the Red Sox, and prior to that Lucas Duda to the Rays, but nothing else. So veterans like Jay Bruce, Curtis Granderson,. Neil Walker and Asdubral Cabrera will stay put - for now.
The Mets have also made a significant move in the infield. They brought up shortstop Amed Rosario, who is the #1 prospect in the system, and they are going to give him a chance to play. The plan was for Jose Reyes to shift over to second base, and that might still happen, but with Cabrera not moving, there could be something different in the offing.
On Thursday they will go with Chris Flexen on the mound, and his one major league outing has not been pleasant. Against the Padres, he allowed four runs in three innings and walked four batters, which was of particular concern because one of the things that made him stand out at the Double-A level was the command of his pitches in the strike zone.
And yes, you heard it - Double-A. This was quite a leap for Flexen, and so there is the notion that he wasn't ready. The Mets have had injury problems with members of the rotation (Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard, Zach Wheeler) so they had to look somewhere for help.
In the baseball betting odds posted on this game at BetDNA, home of the best live betting software on the planet, Colorado is a -137 favorite (+120 on the takeback) with a total of 12.5 runs.
The Rockies have Tyler Chatwood on the mound, and that usually has not been particularly good news for this team at home, where he has a 6.14 ERA. His last start came against the Mets and it was disastrous, as he developed a strain in his calf while warming up for the game in the bullpen and never got untracked at all, letting four runs score while he got only one batter out. There must have been something to the injury thing, as he went on the DL after that, and he's made just one appearance since that July 15 assignment at Citi Field.
Sure, Chatwood's last two home starts were better than usual, but that's not what we're looking at here. What we are most concerned about is how the Mets, with their novice starting pitcher and very shaky bullpen, are going to deal with this Colorado offense, which is producing a .302 average in Denver. If the 23-year-old Flexen was looking for a place to "get well," he may not be in luck. In CJ's Play, we are going with the favored Rockies in this one.
