Baseball Picks -- CJ'S PLAY: Can Mets Cool L.A. Off?

By Charles Jay

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the hottest team in baseball right now. And they have simply rolled over the New York Mets. Now a national audience on ESPN will get to see the team with the best record in baseball as things get underway at 8:05 PM ET at Citi Field. And while viewers are watching, they can utilize the best live betting software on the planet to make their baseball picks at

How much better can it possibly get for the Dodgers, who are now 78-32, playing .700 ball and the best team in all of MLB by eight games over their American League counterparts, the Houston Astros. They have gone 43-7 in their last 50 games, running away with things in the National League West. They have an embarrassment of riches in the starting rotation, and so their starter on Sunday, Hyun Jin-Ryu, might be fighting for a spot when this team gets to the post-season. He's got a 3.83 ERA, but also a 3-6 record, which obviously seems unusual for this team. However, the Dodgers have won five of the last six games he has started.

The Mets are in a position where they are going to rebuild with young players, and that could be reflected in what they do during August. General manager Sandy Alderson has indicated that there could be deals involving some veterans during August, when such trades can be made, provided the players clear waivers. That means Jay Bruce, Curtis Granderson, Neil Walker, Asdubral Cabrera and possibly others could still be on the move. Steven Matz (2-4, 5.50 ERA will get the start for them on Sunday night.

In the baseball odds posted on this game at, home of the best live betting software on the planet, the Dodgers are -161 favorites with a total of nine runs.

Matz missed the first two months of the season with an elbow injury and made his season debut in early June. He was the team's prize prospect when he came aboard in the latter part of the 2015 season and was a key member of the rotation for a World Series team. He has proven capable of brilliant performances; he dazzled Washington and Miami a little more than a month ago, with back-to-back seven-inning shutout efforts, but he has fallen on hard times of late, with poor mechanics contributing to a five-start stretch where he has allowed 24 runs in 18-1/3 innings.

So the question is whether this is such an ideal situation for him to turn things around.

The Mets are doing a few experimental things of late, like putting Asdubral Cabrera at third base, Jose Reyes at second, and Walker at first. They are accommodating rookie shortstop Amed Rosario, who they consider to be a future superstar. They are also likely to call up first baseman Domenic Smith, who is hitting .337 at Triple-A. One New York sports writer implied that they have, in effect, already started spring training for next year in August.

In Saturday's game the Mets hit three homers in the first inning off Rich Hill, but the Dodgers cam roaring back with five homers of their own, as the New York bullpen collapsed. Yes, that is the kind of thing that could easily happen again if Matz doesn't give them some quality innings. In sweeping all six meetings this season, the Dodgers have outscored the Mets by a 49-15 margin. We can get a price of +104 laying a run and a half, and that is exactly what we are going to do.
